Pizza was the perfect solution, as it was made with simple ingredients such as bread, cheese, and toppings that were easily accessible.


One of the first documented pizzas was made for Queen Margherita of Savoy in 1889 by the famous pizzaiolo, Raffaele Esposito. He created a pizza with toppings of mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, and basil to represent the colors of the Italian flag. This pizza was named “Pizza Margherita” in honor of the queen, and it remains a popular choice to this day.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Italian immigrants brought pizza to the United States, where it quickly gained popularity. New York City became a hub for pizza, with Italian immigrants opening pizzerias all over the city. As pizza became more popular, it also evolved, with new toppings and styles being introduced. One of the key developments in the history of pizza was the introduction of mass-produced, pre-made pizza crusts. This allowed for quick and easy preparation, making pizza an even more accessible food for the masses.

Today, pizza is a global phenomenon, with an estimated 3 billion pizzas sold annually in the United States alone. It is available in a variety of styles, from thin and crispy Neapolitan-style pizza to thick and chewy Chicago-style deep-dish pizza.


Pizza has also become a canvas for creative expression, with new and unique toppings being added all the time. From pineapple to prosciutto, the possibilities for pizza toppings are virtually endless.
